The roots of Simunye date back to the time before the Anglo Zulu War of 1879 when early pioneer traders and transport riders kindled lasting friendships with their Zulu neighbours which have lasted through generations, enshrining the peaceful co-existence between the pioneer and Zulu cultures in this awe-inspiring and captivating valley.
In the face of the ever-changing world, it has long been our dream to preserve the historic and cultural treasures taught to us by our grandparents and wise old people now dead and gone. In creating Simunye, we invite you to share this ancient heritage and become "one" with us.
" Simunye means "We are one".
Come join us ... become one with us in Africa. " |
In the words of the Patriarch prince, Gelenja Biyela, whose forebear Mkhosana led the Zulu regiment that defeated the British at Isandlwana:
"If you have come to Simunye, you have come to honour our ways and I have given my blessing to this venture. Go where you please in our territory and everywhere you will be welcome. Because, as the name Simunye says, we are indeed one."
Your hosts, the Biyela Clan, are directly related to the Royal House of Zulu. During the reign of King Dingane, the King fell in love with the beautiful daughter of his brother. Knowing that marrying within a family is prohibited, he chose to expel his brother, the beautiful girl's father and their entire family, calling them "Biyela", which means "the protectors". With her having a new surname, the King could marry her and thus the Biyela Dynasty was born, which to this day carries the praise name "Ndabezitha" which means "Your Highness".
